About: Biggart Hospital Crosshouse Hospital / Stroke Care

(as a relative),

My brother 60 yrs old and lives with family. He was admitted to crosshouse hospital after a stroke. He was there a few days and then was transferred to The Biggart in Ayr. He asked to be moved to the community hospital closer to family, but was told he needed intense rehab at Ayr. He has been there 7 weeks now and it's difficult to know what progress he is making. I speak daily with him on the phone. I can tell his mood is low and. He is getting more depressed and losing hope he was told it would be 6 weeks and now another 2 weeks which will take him to 9. He is getting on well with staff I think, but he is not sleeping. He is only getting physio every 2nd day and none at weekends. He also had none over Christmas and new year. I cannot imagine that this is intense physio.

The nearby Community Hospital has single rooms and a physio department. Why can't patients from the local area being accommodated there? If the facilities are not there what is missing.

Still no response from a Ayrshire and Arran.

Further to the story he had to stay an extra week because the OT was on annual leave and he had to wait til Monday when the OT was back to find out he was going home on Wednesday. He was told that the occupational therapist is the person who organises home care packages.

Really only one person can do this?

What does this cost in hospital care and mental health of patients. What happens if they go for 2 weeks annual leave or go off sick?

In my experience the service is so poor.

Why can’t it be provided in the East Ayrshire Community Hospital?

For local people why have they to go to south Ayrshire for this care?

Dear Margi3

Please accept my sincere apologies for the lack of response to your earlier posts. You should have had a response much earlier and I take full responsibility as the Lead for Care Opinion in NHS Ayrshire and Arran. My service colleagues are working extremely hard at present and are not always able to respond quickly but I should have realised your post had not been dealt with.

I think it may be helpful to discuss your experience with a manager from The Biggart or our allied health professional lead for physiotherapy or OT. I would be more than happy to facilitate this for you.

My contact details are: Laura.harvey@aapct.scot.nhs.uk or telephone 01292 513610.

I am afraid that I am on leave until Monday 25th but I would be happy to get in touch as soon as I return if you leave me your contact information.

Once again, I am so sorry for the late response. Your feedback is extremely important to us and I know that is not reflected with a late reply.

I hope to speak to you soon

Best Wishes

Laura
