"phone first service"

About: Accidents & Emergency / Phone First Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick children / Paediatric Surgery

(as a parent/guardian),

my daughter used this service this week when my 4 year old grandson was ill. she was given a quick appointment as he needed to be seen quickly. they attended the ED and were seen very quickly by a very experienced and efficient Doctor who identified the problem accurately and had him transferred to Regional children's unit for surgery within a few hours where he had his surgery and within the hour and discharged home next morning.

also thank you to the very kind ED porter/security gentleman who helped with her ticket  and carried the child to the car late in the evening. Its difficult very young parent's attending on their own for these appointments during COVID and she was extremely grateful for this assistance.

thank you to everyone involved!

Thank you for your sharing your experiences.

It is an exceptionally difficult time for everyone at the moment and it is reassuring to know that with all the difficulties we are facing, systems in place to help people, continue to work well, even under this extreme pressure.

Its great to have examples of those staff and services who continue to go that bit further for our patients and families and to have their efforts recognised in such a way and your feedback is very much appreciated.

I hope your grandson is well on his way to a full and healthy recovery and would encourage anyone, if you are particularly unwell, or if your child is very unwell, please ask or seek help from the health systems and resources around you. They are under extreme pressure so do be patience, but do check.

Here is a good example of guidance, produced in conjunction with the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

Stay safe.
