"Temperature in non emergency transport"

About: Croydon University Hospital London Ambulance Service NHS Trust

(as a volunteer/advocate),

First of all thank you very much for the non emergency Hospital Transport services provided by the Croydon University Hospital. It is extremely helpful to disabled, feeble, elderly and ill patients with their mobility needs when they have no other transportation means and need wheelchair assistance to their critical appointments  - especially during the covid situation. All the staff are helpful and caring.

But recently have experienced a couple of concerns due to negligence of one or two drivers. When they have multiple passengers to pick up on their route, they open up the back doors and side doors of the ambulance wide open ( for up to 15-20 minutes in recent week) when they go to bring the next patient into the ambulance. Thereby freezing the one or two elderly and sick patients already seated in the ambulance.

Can the transportation team help train the drivers or revisit the policy on how long can they leave the doors open while they wait or bringing in the next patient during the cold winter conditions especially with already sick and elderly patients already seated and waiting in the van in freezing cold condition due to back and side doors left wide open. We have a elderly neighbor now dealing with severe cold, flu/pneumonia due in part to this negligence on part of the driver. So really appreciate the transport team addressing this policy or reminding the ambulance drivers not to keep the doors open in freezing cold conditions for more than 2-3 minutes . Meanwhile do want to thank the transport team for their impeccable and very caring service to the elderly disabled during this very difficult time. Thank you!

Thank you for your comments. London Ambulance Service NHS Trust does not provide the Patient Transport Service for Croydon University Hospital. You will therefore need to approach Croydon University Hospital PALS team - https://www.croydonhealthservices.nhs.uk/patient-advice-and-liaison-pals/
