"Failed by services"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Accident & Emergency General practices in Ayrshire & Arran North Ayrshire Health & Social Care Partnership / Community Mental Health Team (Adult) Three Towns Resource Centre / General Psychiatry

(as a parent/guardian),

My son had severe mental health issues and was transferred to the resource centre from CAMHS when he was 18. He was seen once every 6 months just to be given medication. He had numerous suicide attempts and presented at A&E at Crosshouse hospital where he was deemed fit and discharged. He had addiction issues and they wouldn’t treat him for mental health. The last time they discharged him while he was still under the influence and left him to leave on a bus, all while I was on the phone to his GP and psychiatrist. I then phoned the resource centre 3 times and so did the GP to try and get my son seen quicker as his mental health had deteriorated so bad. Our calls went ignored.

My son died at 19 years old on Christmas morning leaving behind a family who adored him and who did everything to get him the help he needed. I have already contacted the NHS board with a formal complaint and I will not stop until something changes where people with addiction can also get treated for mental health instead of treating them as seperate things. My son received leaflets and help lines to support him which is not enough. My son will not be a sad statistic who has been let down by the shocking services provided I this country. I will do everything in my power and go as far as I can to stop this happening to other families. In my opinion, the service is appalling and sickening and quite frankly the lack of empathy and understanding in treating people as individuals is vile and disgusting.

Dear alphaxw94,

I would like to offer my condolences to you and your family on the sad loss of your son.

Please be assured that NHS Ayrshire & Arran have a robust process in place to review any patient that has died suddenly to identify any learning and service improvement. The review will include meeting with you and your family to discuss the concerns that you have raised as well as advising you of the outcome of the review.

In the meantime please do not hesitate to contact myself on 01563 826120 if you need to discus anything further.

Kind regards

Mairi

Thankyou for your reply and information. Would be glad to discuss issues with you. However, I have already been assisted to lodge a complaint with the care inspectorate and the NHS which is now in process.
