"Our daddy"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Ward A3 Respiratory

(as a relative),

Our daddy, was admitted to Antrim area hospital earlyDecember. Initially he was brought in for a uti.   He then tested positive for covid the following day.   As he was placed into a covid ward, we had no access to him.   He has fairly advanced dementia and is unable to use a mobile phone independently.   We have found the communication with him really difficult and upsetting. When we eventually get through to the ward, we are often told the ward is busy or it’s changeover or he is too tired to talk.   On the few occasions we have spoken to him, it has lifted his spirits and he was able to speak to us.   We are very upset that now we can’t even get speaking to him as we know he loves to hear from us.   We often feel we are bothering the ward.   We understand the pressures of nhs but surely we have a right to speak to our father at this time. There has been no mention of attempting face time for us.   As a patient of dementia we feel there should be more of an effort made to accommodate him communicating with us.   Also we are in the dark as to his progress or care plan in place.   We have requested an update on several occasions. Please can someone help us... we only want to know how he is and also to get speaking to him.

Dear Donsghmore1,

My name is Fraser and I am the Clinical Services Manager for Care of the Elderly.

First of all, thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your experience. I am sorry to hear that you have found communication with your daddy difficult and upsetting. The wards are under tremendous pressure currently and to help with communication in wards where visiting is restricted due to the ongoing risk of Covid-19, we are in the process of setting up a Family Liaison Service. This service will support the ward staff by contacting the patient’s nominated Next of Kin with regular updates and to relay any concerns from relatives back to ward staff. This is still in the early phases and therefore will take time to fully embed within wards. I recognise the anxiety felt by patients and relatives during these difficult times and the hurt that separation can cause. Please accept my sincere apologies. I would be grateful if you would contact me directly so that I can support you with this to the following email address fraser.Collie@northerntrust.hscni.net

Again, thank you for taking the time to feed back to us. It can help us learn and improve where required.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Kind Regards,

Fraser
