"Unsafe discharge"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My husband was BIBA following a RTA where he required to be cut out of the vehicle following the collision.  He was lucky he did not have any broken bones, however did suffer from whiplash, a head injury following hitting windscreen, bruising to his ribs and stomach and back pain.

He was discharged after several hours in hospital without any pain relief, no head injury advice and after having his upper body clothing cut off by the ambulance crew, he had no jumper only an outer jacket, he had no money or phone and I was asked by the emergency services not to attend the hospital, I would be phoned when he was discharged.

My husband left the hospital dazed and dizzy and began to walk from Wishaw to Airdrie, when I asked the nurse if they knew where he was they laughed and said probably out the front.

Dear Colquhounl,

im sorry to hear about your husbands accident and how this must have been a frightening and worrying experience for you both.

I was really quite alarmed to hear of the concerns that you have raised, this is not the standards that are expected and I think it would be really helpful for me to review your husbands care and treatment plan through the ED and the plan for him when discharge was decided and how this was coordinated.

If you could please contact the patient affairs team on 01698 366558 to provide me with additional details in order to give you a targets response.

I hope that he is recovering well and feeling better.

best wishes

Andy
