"Labour & birth"

About: Downe Hospital / Midwifery Unit Maternity / Labour Ward

(as a service user),

I gave birth at the beginning of January to my first baby. At my 40 week appointment I was measuring big so I was told I would need to be induced.

Whilst I wasn’t against induction, I feel like I didn’t have enough time to process the information as within 30 seconds of being told this I was already booked in. I felt like I had no choice in this and I wish I was given the opportunity to discuss this with the midwife and agree with her that this was needed rather than being told this would happen to me.

However, the care that I received was phenomenal. The midwives were absolutely incredible and I cannot thank them enough for the care that they provided me with whilst I was in hospital. They were very understanding, caring and reassuring and treated me with the upmost dignity and respect. They helped me with breastfeeding and checked how I was coping which felt good to be asked.

Once I was discharged from the hospital the community midwives were lovely. I was having trouble with breastfeeding and once I rang, they were straight out to my house which I really appreciated.

Midwives don’t get enough credit for the work that they do and they really made my birthing experience pleasant, relaxed and actually enjoyable!

Dear eaternp35,

Congratulations on the birth of your baby last January. That you for your feedback and we take on board your wish that you would have liked the opportunity to discuss your induction plan with your midwife and we will feed this suggestion back to the relevant teams.

I am delighted to hear that the care you received was phenomenal and that the hospital and community teams all were on hand to support you to breast feed your baby. I am proud to be part of a team that provides this level of care that ensured that you had a positive birthing experience.

Wishing you and your family a very happy Christmas and New Year,

Kind Regards

Sarah
