For many years I suspected that I had Asperger's, but as a reasonably functional middle aged woman I imagined that to persuade a GP to refer me for assessment was going to be pretty much impossible. The vast majority of stories from women on the spectrum show that generally GPs seem pretty ignorant and ill-informed about autism and particularly how it manifests differently in women (ie not so obvious/hidden or masked).
I plucked up the courage after years of putting it off and made a telephone appointment. One of the female GPs called me. I wish I remembered who it was as I would wish to thank her personally.) I had a whole speech planned, but I didn't need it. She made a referral without question and I am forever grateful to her.
I was diagnosed with Asperger's 15 months ago by the equally fantastic autism service in Hackney who had provided training to the GPs in Hackney.
