"Hygiene and safety"

About: NHS Louisa Jordan

(as the patient),

I had to attend the hospital for a CT scan last Thursday, the area where we waited was a long tubular steel bench sectioned for covid risk. There was a lady waiting in there also she had been waiting over an hour before being seen. As she went in for her appointment an elderly gentleman arrived with his carer for his appointment and was about to take up the previous ladies seat. I told them it had not been cleaned or sanitised and they sat elsewhere. There were plenty of people around in high vis but no cleaning was happening that I saw – very worrying. I did report it to some staff but nothing happened while I was there.

When I went in for my scan, I informed the staff member carrying out my scan about this and they were very angry about it, as they were meticulous within that room even wiping my glasses. I am very concerned that there was no obvious cleaning happening between the patient arrivals and appointments during this time of Covid pandemic. There was plenty of people around surely someone should take responsibility for the hygiene and safety of patients.

Many thanks for advising us of your concerns regarding the cleaning of the seats in the waiting area outside the CT scan. Please be assured within NHS Louisa Jordan we are committed to providing a clean and safe environment for our patients, often exceeding national cleaning requirements.

The national guidance for cleaning of the environment contained in the COVID-19 Infection Prevention and Control Addendum for Acute Settings advises the following

‘During this ongoing pandemic, cleaning frequency of the environment should be increased across all pathways. A minimum of 4 hours should have elapsed between the first daily clean and the second daily clean’

The seats in the common waiting areas in the main concourse are cleaned at least every 2 hours by our staff which exceeds the national requirements. It is not required nor possible to clean each seat after each patient in a communal out-patient waiting area and this will not happen in any other healthcare setting in Scotland.

The people you observed in high vis clothing are our security staff and fire wardens who do not undertake any cleaning duties

I have given your feedback to our staff in the scanning department.

I hope this reassures you that the national guidance for cleaning of equipment is being exceeded in NHS Louisa Jordan
