"Antenatal Booking Appointment"

About: Braid Valley Hospital and Ballymena Health and Care Centre / Community Midwives

(as a service user),

Attended Ballymena health and care centre for booking appointment. Well organised and HCA screening for covid on arrival. Running to time, going well.

Initial midwife wearing fluid shield mask and apron. Did not put gloves or eye protection on.

Second midwife brought in to confirm scan who was wearing fabric mask and didn’t put any other PPE on. I feel really strongly that this is completely reckless. If either of these staff members tests positive for Covid in the next 48hours, my wife will have to isolate for 2 weeks. That’s if she is identified as a contact, and if she’s not, there is potential for covid to spread even further.

Dear Ballymena123

My name is Jackie O’Neill and I am the Lead Midwife for the Community Midwife Team in Ballymena Health and Care Centre.

Firstly, thank you so much for writing your feedback and bringing this to my attention. It is so important for us to hear when we don’t get something right, especially in the current Pandemic.

In this case, I can appreciate your frustration at the lack of compliance to current guidance around PPE and the anxiety it caused to you and your wife at a time that should be very exciting. I would very much like to apologise for this, and I will ensure that this is brought to the attention of all staff within the department to remind them of their duty and responsibility to keep informed of the most recent NI Executive and Public Health Guidance.

As part of the guidance, staff will also be asked to reflect on their practice and the potential impact that their lack of compliance to current PPE Guidelines could have on patients and their colleagues. I have sought advice from the Trust Infection Control Team and will feed this back to the Community Midwife Team so that they can learn and improve in order to reduce any further risk.

If you would like to discuss this further, please don’t hesitate to contact me via email Jackie.ONeill@northerntrust.hscni.net

May I take this opportunity to apologise again and thank you for providing such important feedback.

Best Wishes to you both,

Jackie
