I spent 4 days in the Elective ward in Daisyhill and was cared for by the wonderful nurses and nursing assistants there. Day 1 post-op (hysterectomy) I felt very vulnerable and was in a lot of pain and the Nursing team helped me manage that pain and encouraged me out of bed despite my strong protestations that I could not! I joked with them that they were bossy but I felt entirely safe, supported and respected and also proud of myself when I was able to do it.
Over the next few days I watched the staff as they ran around the ward, administering IV’s, making beds, organising meds, doing admissions / discharges amongst a million other things. Staffing was obviously a challenge which I understood from working in the HSC, but it was difficult to actually witness it first hand. However despite the busyness each time I encountered one of the team I felt they listened to me, and gave me the time and care I needed at that moment and I also witnessed their compassion with other patients as they confided their worries or concerns to the staff. It was heartwarming to see genuine person centred care in action.
I was re-admitted to the Female Surgical Ward a few days after discharge, via ED, with an infection and spent 5 more days in hospital, experiencing exceeded care again.
I know I have missed some names so am sorry if I have but to the Nurses Deirdre, Delphy, Molly, Tracy, Fiona, Savannah, Sarah, Mary Kate, Yvonne, Sue, Eilish, Shauna, Denise, Michelle, Katrina, Student Nurses Sarah & Rachel, and all the other wonderful Nurses and Nursing Assistants thank you so much for looking after me. I am so thankful that you helped me through this experience, and you are all a credit to your profession.
Kind Regards
"My experience of post-surgery nursing care"
