"My time in the Nightingale"

About: Belfast City Hospital Mater Hospital Nightingale Wards / Nightingale 2

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I started in the Mater – But I don’t remember that.  I was in a coma for 3 – 4 weeks.

I was moved to the City Hospital.  When I woke up, just lying in bed with tubes all over me I can remember being thirsty and the nurse moistening my lips with a sponge.

My treatment was second to none.  Every nurse, doctor and physio were so good.  There wasn’t enough staff, but the staff that were there were absolutely brilliant.  They talk to you as a person – and that makes all the difference.

I came to Ward 2 in the Whiteabbey Nightingale.  I had six days of good, solid rehabilitation.  Once I got in, everyone was round making sure I was comfortable.  Olwyn and Gill got me on my feet in five days without aids.

The staff always help me with my needs.  Ruby is so friendly.  Karen is another angel…  and Tracy, Hayley and Marion.  In fact all the staff are the same.

The ward is comfortable.  It is spotless.  The domestics and nurses are always wiping everything down.  The food is good.  Cups of tea – the nurses always get me one.

Everything is always done with a smile.

Hello, my name is Máire and I'm the Care Opinion facilitator in the Belfast Trust.

I know that there will be other staff who will want to comment on this story, but I just want to say thank you to this patient for their kind words about their experience. I can imagine that the situation was frightening for them at times and I wanted to thank them for acknowledging how the care they have received in the Nightingale hospitals made a difference for them.

I hope that they are feeling stronger now and continue to recover.

Sending every good wishes for the journey ahead.

Máire
