I have a condition that requires surveillance for Barrett’s Oesophagus and was really pleased that a specialist nurse had been appointed last year, as I always have trouble getting hold of anyone who knows or understands what is needed when I need advice, Imagine my upset at discovering when I phoned last week that Barrett’s is not a priority and the unit was too busy to allow the specialist nurse to carry out the role ( as advised by a nurse who answered the phone). I now feel I have been left without a support system, and am upset that all patients in my position were not informed about the cessation of this service, at least by letter as we all had our hopes up that we were being looked after and someone was keeping an eye on our condition, The nurse was great, I could phone her any time I was worried and she would reassure me, she even contacted my GP on one occasion to help me out.
Please sort this out Ayrshire and Arran, as I have friends in other areas who have still got their specialist nurses, despite the pandemic - Covid-19 doesn’t stop Barrett’s being a serious condition that could become life-threatening if not taken care of properly.
