"Covid 19 birth experience"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Maternity care Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a service user),

I was booked to be induced in Altnagelvin Hospital 26th october 2020. Unfortunately on a routine covid screening pre-admission I had tested positive for Covid 19. I was absolutely distraught.. From things I was viewing on social media and the news I imagined being alone in labour, what was supposed to be one of my happiest times was turning into a nightmare.

This changed the minute Sr Hughes from Altnagelvins midwifery led met me at the front door. She showed me the utmost care and reassurance. She explained to my partner how and when he will will enter to be there for the birth. She got my induction started straight away as we went in the door.

Midwife Kylie looked after me the first night and could not have been more attentive she got active labour started before she left shift the following morning. Midwives Rosealeen and Sophie delivered my beautiful baby boy in the most dignified way although I most definitely wasnt an easy patient towards the end. They delivered him in full PPE with not a complaint always putting what I needed/wanted first, and making my partner so at ease.

Kylie and Kita looked after us both the following night, and where there for anything we needs. Midwife Laura looked after us the following day constantly chasing paediatrics to see if they could facilitate discharge. Unfortunately we had to stay another night but were in the safe hands of midwife Sharon who again could not do more than enough for us.

Every one of these girls are worth their weight in gold, you can see from the minute they enter the room how much they love their jobs and although after my partner left following delivery no visitors were allowed I never once felt alone with these girls. I also have to mention the paediatric doctor Aodhann who also went above and beyond and even made me laugh about the difficult position we were in. I gave birth in midwifery led 4 years ago and was distraught I wasnt mid led care this time.. as aodhann said id do anything to get back even catch covid.

All jokes aside I really thank everyone from the bottom of my heart. Yous all turned what I thought would be an awful experience into such a positive and I will always be eternally grateful.
