"My Recovery"

About: Change Grow Live The Forward Trust

(as a service user),

In November 2018 I was approaching my 40th birthday and my life was crumbling around me. alcohol had controlled my life for well over a decade and I saw no way out. I had an episode and ended up in A&E (not for the first time) and something clicked in my head, I could do this no longer. I eventually saw the mental health nurse on the ward on the morning of my 40th. She recommended I go and speak with The Forward Trust in Dover. I left the hospital and very next day went and spoke openly & honestly with them. It was the first time I had spoken the truth about my depression and addiction to anyone, including myself. I was out on an alcohol reduction plan and attended a weekly group. Three month later, I had cut my intake in half and was recommended for community detox followed by a three month day programme course. I completed detox and a week in to their day programme I was at risk of being homeless. I was recommended to speak with CGL at Shepherd House in Folkestone. I met with staff there for an interview and two days later I moved in. I felt safe. I felt listened to and safe.

I graduated the Forward day programme in June 2019 and continued groups at Shepherd House. Being surrounded by people, all wanting to better their lluves, all with stories to tell was amazing. The staff were interested, engaging and genuinely wanted the best for each resident. I told my struggles and felt listened to, without judgement, for the first time in my life.

In August 2019 I moved to The Cedars, Canterbury where I continue my new, alcohol free life. Again, the staff are genuine, professional and engaging. I've had the opportunity to volunteer with various charities to find where I fit in and what I want to do as a new career. I have taken up running now and lost nearly 4 stone and planning to run the London Marathon 2021 to raise money for Forward Trust the CGL.

I can not Thank CGL enough for providing the support, the housing and a friendly ear to bend as I move onwards & upwards with my new life.
