"Work on communication skills"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Maternity unit

(as the patient),

I was admitted to post natal ward after delivered my baby and because of high blood pressure. I had slept a total of 5 hours in 6 days. I shared it with a staff member and the reply was that they didn’t even have a seat on their shift? Really? As a healthcare professional this comment was totally wrong at that moment. Needs to work on communication skills and empathy.

Dear Mamaofthree

Congratulations on the birth of your baby and thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us.

This type of comment is not acceptable at any time, least of all when you needed a bit of TLC, kindness and compassion. Please accept my sincere apologies.

Be assured that I will follow this up with the team and ensure staff are made aware of the impact such a flippant, uncaring comment can make. An update on professionalism and communication skills will be a priority.

I hope your blood pressure has now settled and that you are at home enjoying your new baby and getting lots of help from the wee one's older siblings.

With best wishes

Gail
