"Serious changes need to be made"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

My Grandmother was admitted to hospital for a UTI she then came home with nothing on her discharge sheet. She was in for over a week. She came home and within 30 hrs she was admitted back due to a gastric bleed she was then moved from ward to ward and ended up being left to soil herself and had a catheter. Even when the catheter was removed she was still left to soil herself with no help at all. Left to lie in it was her words.

Then asked to roll to the side so they could change her. She lost all dignity. We also believe she contracted herpes there which we were never told about she had no medication for this till I got her home and had a doctor visit. I got her home and she used the commode that night. I’m disgusted in the care she received. Not helped to brush her teeth was shocking and to come home with a virus like that when my sister in law is pregnant is unforgivable. Serious changes need to be made.

Firstly we'd like to apologise for the length of time replying back to you.

I am extremely sorry to read the comments about your grandmother's stay with us. The poor standards of care that you describe is far below the standards that we expect from our staff, and it is clear that this has been a distressing experience for you all.

Clearly we do need to look into this immediately for you all and for changes to be made. I have shared it with the matron but we need to know what ward your grandmother stayed on If you could contact our PALS team who can take further details to pass to the matron. The team can be contacted on 01205 446243 or PALS@ulh.nhs.uk and please quote CO795951
