"Injured after a fall"

About: South Tyrone Hospital / Minor Injuries Unit

(as a service user),

I discovered the existence of the MI Unit on the Southern Trust website. Phoned in advance to ensure I could be seen. I arrived to an almost empty waiting area and I was dealt with quickly and efficiently. Although I had sustained a bad fall and had a painful hand ,hip and knee I learned that they could not x-ray my hip as there was no doctor on site. It would have been useful to have known this in advance. X-ray revealed  broken wrist and I was very grateful to have it put in  cast and sent on my away without delay.

All staff were pleasant and helpful. However maybe the X-ray department might consider offering a gown that is easy to put on when the patient has suspected fractures. I had been dressed at home by my daughter and struggled to get out of my clothes and into a tight fitting hospital gown without assistance.

Good morning.

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience at our Minor Injuries Unit. I am glad you felt the staff in Minor Injuries Unit were pleasant and helpful and you were treated in timely manner. I will share this with the team. I note you phoned in advance and perhaps that was an opportunity for us to advise we cannot treat hip injuries or indeed x-ray them. We are sorry for this lack of clarity and will review this going forward. I hope that you are recovering okay after your fall.

Paul Smith

Acting Head of Service Emergency Departments & Medicine

Thank you for letting us know how you felt during a recent experience in the X-ray Department in Minor Injuries Unit. We recently have introduced disposable gowns into the department during out of hours working. However as a result of your valued feedback we will now offer these to all patients who require them. May I take this opportunity to thank you for your helpful comments which will result in improved patient care.

Kind regards

Ann Tate, Site Lead Radiographer
