I was admitted for the first time in my life via A&E in the middle of the night for pregnancy related illness. I was met by an amazing nurse, Chris, who was reassuring and understanding. I was anxious and concerned about being left alone with the COVID restrictions on visitors, but he reassured me it would be assessed on a case-by-case basis. I was worried about my pregnancy and my own health (I have anxiety which is noted on my medical file) so my partner was there to support me.
Unfortunately the nurse who called me to take my bloods could not have been more rude. This nurse not only shouted at me across the waiting room that my partner 'needs to leave' (despite a group of drunk lads all being sat together having a laugh while waiting for their friends' treatment, as well as other pairs sitting together throughout A&E - all socially distanced) because of COVID restrictions but they continued on about it while stabbing at my arms to get my blood sample. They did not ask me to 'make a fist' or use a band to help improve my veins to get blood (as everyone else has done for bloods while I was dehydrated). I ended up with very large bruises on both arms that multiple health care professionals commented on. What was upsetting was how insensitive and aggressive they were despite me sitting there petrified, very unwell and in tears. What a horrible experience I hope to never repeat. Not what you'd expect from a nurse. The rest of my admission went well and all the other professionals I came into contact with were wonderful.
