"Admission to hospital for my severely disabled three year old"

About: Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Accident & Emergency (Emergency Care) Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Paediatric Assessment Unit (Children's Assessment Unit)

(as a service user),

Admission to hospital for my severely disabled three year old after severe stomach pain and seizures.

I would just like to provide some feedback, which I should have done long before now, to say a HUGE thank you to those at the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital who are involved in the care of our son, especially Nurse Angela from the Children's A&E department who continuously goes above and beyond anytime my son has to visit the hospital.

My son has a rare genetic condition with multiple complex disabilities and uncontrolled epilepsy. He cannot sit, see, talk or walk. He is unable to hold his head up or use his limbs purposefully. WE have had to visit A&E as well as the PAU (prior to Covid changes) several times over the last three years and on many occassions, he has been cared for by Nurse Angela. She also looked after my nephew when he was very ill with a chest infection.

Back in April, my son was having multiple clusters of seizures which we could not get under control. WE ended up in A&E where we were met by nurse Angela. Although we are used to epilepsy and the uncertain, this one was particularly stressful. Our son hadn't been sleeping, was seizing on and off pretty much constantly throughout the day and not recovering well. Nurse Angela hardly left his side during the whole admission, constantly checking him, reassuring me and making me feel calmer while he was being checked. On top of this, Nurse Angela made sure that I had food/drinks to keep me going as in the rush, I hadn't had time to pack any supplies and the cafes were closed due to Covid.

This is just one example, but I must stress that on so many occasions, Nurse Angela has checked on our son, even when she is not the main nurse caring for him. She goes out of her way to come through to see us and check that we are ok - and is always there is we need some advice or assistance (where she can), making myself and my husband feel much less stressed in what can be a very stressful situation. She has such a caring and kind manner and nothing is too much for her.

I can't praise all the nursing staff within A&E, PAU and the Medical Ward enough - they are amazing. But Nurse Angela has really done more for us than most would realise and we are very thankful for the care that my son has received in RACH.

Dear Linz39linz,

Thank you so much for taking the time to post this feedback. I am delighted that the staff in Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital have consistently provided you and your son with such excellent care.

You specifically mention Nurse Angela in your post and it sounds like she regularly goes above and beyond to provide exceptional care. I will of course share your feedback with her and I am sure she will be delighted to hear that she makes such a difference.

Thank you for your feedback.
