"How I find my experience on the ward"

About: Highbury Hospital / Redwood Ward 2 (Female)

(as the patient),

I found the ward very clean and tidy my room was very nice and good size. The staff was lovely just don’t feel there is enough 1 to 1 chats or support as it’s too busy. I feel there isn’t enough counciling to patients available. Also on admission I wasn’t explained anything what was happening I had to ask to have a 1 to 1 so things could be explained. The activities was really good and the activities coordinator was amazing at getting me to join in which at first I didn’t want to but with a bit of persuasion I joined in and felt so much better afterwards completely changed my mood. So I am thankful for that.

From when I first came in to now I feel a bit of improvement in my mood and my way of thinking. The smoothies were a fab idea. Noise levels are very high which I guess can’t be helped. I do feel though that there is not enough support with regards to talking to anyone for example on ward councillor etc. Also when patients do have a meltdown they just get left. Apart from that lovely ward. Also as a smoker I strongly think that fag breaks should be after dinner times. Tbh I felt I had the most support and time spent with me with the events coordinator so thank you xx

Hello 2020,

My name is Jo and I'm the involvement, experience and volunteer lead for AMH. Thank you so much for taking time to post about your experiences on Redwood 2, feedback is very important to us as we want to make sure we give the best possible care and support to our patients. I'm sorry to hear that you had to seek information about your care and treatment when you were admitted, this isn't how it should be. I'm not sure when you were a patient, but I am aware the wards have been incredibly busy recently which can sadly impact on good communication, noise levels and the amount of 1-1 time patients get with staff. We do need to explore how we can better support a ward when very busy.

I shall make sure your kind comments about the activity co-ordinator are shared with them - it will make their day I'm sure! We have increased the amount of activity co-ordinators we have across the wards as previous feedback from patients told us this was a significant gap. It’s good to hear that this has made a difference to your hospital stay.

I’d love to meet with you to talk about your experiences, especially your comments about counselling and discuss how we might improve things in the future. I'm at Highbury Hospital tomorrow if you're free, or Monday 5th October? Alternatively, you can contact me via email or phone

I will also discuss the points you have raised with the ward manager, matron and service manager for Highbury.

Kind Regards

Jo Horsley

AMH involvement, experience and volunteer lead.
