"Hydrotherapy"

About: Inverclyde Royal Hospital / Physiotherapy

(as a service user),

I have a long term condition and I  am  in a flare up with severe pain, weakness  and stiffness.   I am unable to work or drive due to my condition and because of  the flare up I am unable to do my daily exercises.

Previously I was referred to hydrotherapy at the  Inverclyde Royal and this really helped me manage my flare without relying on stronger medication.   I have been advised that this pool is not currently open and that to access hydrotherapy in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde  I will need to travel from Greenock to either Paisley or Glasgow.   This is very  disappointing as the journey to access this service now will take  around 3 hours per appointment there and back  and  is not one I can manage or afford.

I am very disappointed that access to hydrotherapy is not offered equally to patients in Greenock and I  would appreciate if the closure of this pool and the current demand for this service locally could be reviewed.

Hello KelJ

My colleague Alison has asked that I share the following with you.

Thank you for your comments regarding the Hydrotherapy Pool at the Inverclyde Royal Hospital. We always welcome feedback from our service users and are glad you had such a positive experience when accessing our hydrotherapy service.

The Hydrotherapy pool in IRH has been closed now since 2010 and unfortunately there is no plans to reopen the pool. While we do still have pools at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and the Royal Alexandra Hospital we have had to temporarily suspend hydrotherapy service at both of these sites due to the Covid Pandemic.

We would be more than happy to arrange a telephone call for you with one of our Physiotherapists to discuss your current symptoms and look at alternative options to help you manage your long term condition. If this would be helpful then please get in touch with us on 0141 201 6626.

Kind Regards

Alison, Interim Chief AHP North Sector
