"My sons treatment for a broken finger"

About: South Tyrone Hospital / Minor Injuries Unit

(as a parent/guardian),

My son arrived home from football training with a very swollen hand and I worried I would get him treatment as it was late in the evening and in my experience Craigavon A & E can be a nightmare and that due to COVID-19 Daisy Hill A & E is closed.

I rang South Tyrone hoping for some help and couldn’t have been more pleased with the treatment. The girl I spoke to took a description of the injury and said they would be able to X-ray up but to try to to the hospital before it closed at 8. 30pm. This was brilliant as football training is in the evening an if hadn’t been open until this time I could well have spent several hours in Craigavon with a frightened son.

The care and attention we received in South Tyrone was excellent. The team were extremely efficient and we were in and out within the hour. This service in South Tyrone is invaluable for those with minor injuries instead of having to make the trip to Craigavon to sit for hours and where, no doubt my child would have been overwhelmed and probably frightened. Thank you so much to the staff in South Tyrone.

Dear Smurfbarrett,

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide us with feedback in relation to your recent experience with your son. As the Head of Service for the Minor Injuries Unit at South Tyrone Hospital I was very pleased to read that the staff were able to help allay your anxieties and to provide the necessary treatment for your son in a timely way. I am also delighted to read that you found the care and attention to be excellent and I want to assure you that I will share your story with the staff in the Minor Injuries Unit. I trust that your son is keeping well.

Can I reassure you that there is also a service for people who attend with minor injuries on the Craigavon Area Hospital site. This is in a separate area from the main Emergency Department. The Emergency Nurse Practitioners from Craigavon Area Hospital and Daisy Hill Hospital are based in there and I am sure your son would have been seen promptly there also.

Many thanks again and best wishes

Paul Smith

Acting Head of Service Emergency Departments & Medicine
