"Gp visit"

About: Borders General Practices

(as a relative),

My husband went to see gp today, which is rare, due to a continual swollen leg, that had previously been seen weeks ago by BECS doctor and scanned to rule out DVT and treated for cellulitis (service brilliant).   However the leg was still swollen and sore and after persuading him to call gp he went only to return to the car fuming.

The gp told him he was over weight and that was why his lower leg was swollen.   No other tests were done ie observations or checking to see if diabetes was ok.   When someone hardly goes to the doctors and comes away feeling like hes wasted someone's time and  will refuse to go back now, how we as NHS staff have let him down.   If everyone feels like this  is this why A and E department is so overwhelmed at times as the wards are too.

As a staff nurse who works in a hospital, I have never felt so disappointed and sadden that certain doctors let the rest of us down.   Maybe NHS Management should look at the doctor practices and why people favour  A and E departments over GPs.

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time to give feedback about your husband's care. I am sorry that your husband's experience with the GP was not pleasant. The GP surgery is an important part of our Healthcare system. The relationship between your husband and his GP is crucial. It is important that your husband feels able to talk to his GP about his health concerns and feels that the GP takes his concerns seriously. It is also important that a GP can tackle any issues that they believe may be contributing to your husband’s health concerns. I would encourage your husband to go and work through this with his GP, expressing his concerns. Building the relationship will stand him in good stead for future health concerns. If your husband feels unable to do this then it may be best for him to see another GP.

Thank you for your kind words about BECS, I will pass it onto to the team.

Nicola
