"Better Efficiency"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Respiratory Medicine

(as the patient),

This is NOT a complaint,  the quality of care in all areas was excellent, .. BUT

there could be significant efficiencies to the benefit of patients, NHS staff and NHS budget expenditure, if the following process was recognised and adjusted correctly.

I have Bronchiectasis,.. the care has been very good, but in  the process of treatment I was waiting for a simple Acapella chest clearing device. Due to significant backlog in the Respiratory Physiotherapist's dept. this was not forthcoming.  The Bronchiectasis Specicalist Nurse offered to get this for me, but this was refused by the RP department. (upstairs in the Royal Edinburgh Hospital)

This is an absolutely simple piece of kit that could have easily been demonstrated to me by the Bronchiectasis Nurse or indeed by my local GP Asthma Nurse,.. instead I have waited months, had to drive from North Berwick up to the hospital and gone through (repeated) a process that I've undergone many times already by GP nurses and my Bronchiecstasis Nurses.

There needs to a better recognition and sharing of basic skills and responsibilities across the varied health units and trained personnel. I could have walked to my GP Asthma nurse  6 months ago and got this device if there was a willingness to recognise and share skills and simple items of kit.  Hope this is of some help.

I have now got my Acapella item today at the hospital, Respiratory Physiotherapy Dept. - lovely helpful  nurse, but so much time and money could have been saved)

Dear Berwick builder,

Thanks for sharing your experience. It's great to hear about the excellent quality of care that you've received. I also appreciate that some things could have gone better in terms of the equipment you need for your condition. I would like to reassure you that I have shared your feedback with the Respiratory team and I've asked them to consider how this could be improved going forward.

I am glad to hear you've now received the equipment you need and won't have to make so many trips to hospital in the future.

Kind Regards

Simon

Simon

Many thanks for such a prompt response.

Having spent a number of years in a large private Utilities Industry, Apart from daily management of many key delivery aspects in the Scottish Region, I spent a number of years in a special UK Project Team looking at Process Re-engineering I.e, how to get all the various departments sharing and working together in a unified manner. This released staff to carry out other additional work and significantly reduced overall costs with out any loss of efficiency.

I suppose as a patient I am always interested in how this might be done, (or is being done) across the various departments in the NHS, both from a Hospital and GP aspect.

Thanks again for your response.

Yours

Berwick Builder
