"Disappointing maternity experience"

About: St George's Hospital (Tooting) / Maternity care

(as the patient),

The maternity services were a nightmare from the beginning. Found it impossible to get in touch with a midwife on the phone in case of concerns although it is proudly advertised and encouraged on Twitter to do so.

Had the worst experience at EPU when I went there due to bleeding and back pain and cramps. Turned away by the duty Gynaecologist without understanding my situation as they didn't ask me what kind of symptoms I had and nonchalantly suggested I "wait for the scan" the following week to check if my baby was well instead of checking me. When I said I still want to wait I was told off by the receptionists who said I "completely disregarded the Gynaecologists opinion". I was there at 8.30am and I was informed that the queue was long and there wouldn't be enough time to see me and they asked me to go to A&E. A&E said they didn't have the equipment to check my pregnancy and asked me to go back to EPU by which by the time had closed (11am).

In the end I had to go to a different hospital who took me in immediately. Thankfully the staff were sympathetic and understood the urgency of the situation, they did the necessary checks, and unfortunately I was diagnosed with a miscarriage. I am anaemic and if I  had gone home  as per the hospital's initial suggestion and waited for my next week's scan, there could have been further complications due to bleeding. No expecting mother should go though such an experience. There was no care/concern expressed by the maternity team - which is against the values of "Excellent, kind, responsible and respectful". I will definitely not be coming back here.
