Our relative was admitted to Forth Valley Royal Hospital the beginning of April 2020 to ward B12 via ambulance due to suspected COVID. Sadly due to worsening symptoms he was quickly transferred to ICU initially as a precaution and for more intensive monitoring. He required non invasive ventilation for several days and then deteriorated significantly and required invasive ventilation and single organ support, this continued for nearly two weeks before they sadly passed away peacefully.
The nursing and medical staff throughout the hospital journey did all they could and provided the upmost care, compassion and comfort for our relative, whilst maintaining reliable and consistent communication with the appropriate family members. The medical treatment and decision making was timely and always appropriate and any changes were reliably and sensitively delivered, despite the ever evolving presentation of his clinical condition. There was ongoing positive emotional support to both our relative and his immediate family, with understanding and sensitivity displayed by all staff involved in his care.
The Bereavement aftercare provided by ICU was greatly appreciated and comforting. We found this to be a unique and valuable resource for, particularly those that experienced loss during the COVID pandemic. The most difficult part of the journey for our family was not being with our loved at the end of his life. However,ICU were accommodating and nothing was too much trouble.
As a family we having nothing but respect, admiration and appreciation for their care and attention to our much loved and missed relative.
"great care and compassion shown"
