"Getting severe pain during colonoscopy"

About: Tameside General Hospital / Colorectal surgery

(as the patient),

I have had two colonoscopies, one in 2016 and one in 2020. In 2016 the colonoscopy was unsuccessful due to poor prep and impaction. I didn't have any sedation and the procedure was  stopped due to severe pain.

In Aug 2020 i went for another colonoscopy i took the prep as directed and on the morning of my procedure was relieved that all i was passing was a clear liquid from my bowel and i was sure my bowel was completely empty which may have caused the severe pain in 2016. I also decided to have sedation this time as i still remembered the severe pain from the last time.

I couldn't fault the care by the doctors and nurses as i explained my worries and anxiety i was feeling about having the procedure again and what had happened in the past and they were very reassuring  which made me feel a little more at ease.

When having the procedure i was informed what was happening throughout. Even with the sedation i was aware what was happening and felt quite relaxed. The pain once again was so severe that that even under sedation i asked the doctor to stop.

I am so disappointed and feel it is my fault that I have wasted the doctor's time. I wouldn't go for this procedure again as all it reminds me of is how painful it is.

Good afternoon

Thank you for sharing your experience. I am sorry to hear that your procedure was stopped on both occasions due to the severity of pain you felt. The sedation used is intended to cause a sleepy sensation while a patient remains awake however some patients do find this procedure painful and difficult to tolerate.

We would like to assist you further, owing to your recent experience and would appreciate it if you could contact our PALS and Complaints Team on 0161 922 4466 or via email at palsandcomplaints@tgh.nhs.uk so that a member of our team can provide you with guidance and how we may be of further assistance.

Kind regards
