My Mum had a stroke at the beginning of August. She went to A&E at ERI and had a CT and emergency medication. Although we were not allowed in to A&E due to Covid, the communication with the staff in A&E was very good.
My Mum was then taken to ward 101 for observation overnight. She was discharged home into the care of my elderly Dad the next day. My Dad had concerns taking her home but was told that she was fit for discharge. He was told to phone 999 if he was worried overnight.
The night of discharge, my Mum was vomiting continuously and could not take any of her essential medication. I called Ward 101 and the Nurse told me to call 999.
My Mum was taken to A&E again, given anti sickness medication and strong painkillers. We then had a phone call from the A&E doctor to collect her from the waiting room as there was no reason to admit her.
I feel a bit disappointed that she was discharged from the ward so quickly. My Dad was not given any written information on what a stroke is, what follow up there would be or any advice moving forward.
The staff were all very friendly and helpful and clearly adjusting to a new way of working. We just feel that we’ve been left with this diagnosis and no information or nobody to talk to, it’s a shame.
