"'Im an alcoholic'"

About: Change Grow Live Cambridgeshire / Wisbech

(as a service user),

I went to detox in Cambridge but cannot remember where or when this was due to my poor health and drinking . I was off drink for 67 days after leaving and thought I would be okay to have a drink ..and this was not the case. I was wrong !

I relapsed to drinking , going into  hospital with a fractured pelvis, fractured ribs and pins in my ankle and much more.

I was one step away from the street and went into a hostel. The Ferry which is alcohol free supported accommodation. I am an alcoholic and needed to drink and so was drinking  again dependently.

One night I was returning from hospital on a zimmer frame and on return they advised I was too high risk re medical needs and needed to relocate. At this time I was taken in by Christian friends and relocated in March locality.

Personal problems did not help and then Dawn from CGL sorted it out for me to go to Ipswich Hub for detox. When I left I did not drink for 6 months , doing well and wanted to start peer support Until....
More personal problems and COVID 19 and my voices continued.
I engaged with Joanna from CGL and she supported me with letter to GP. I have also now had letter from MIND to engage to get help for my mental health.
My mental health has always been  poor and I hear voices and even in detox this continued. I did not realise how unwell i was  ..I drank to sleep....
Dawn has been brilliant and she gives me it straight when she needs to and is very supportive. I am now committed to work towards leaving the drink behind and would like to do peer mentoring one day as would like to support others.
CGL has been brilliant. was not ready for this but now im here, met so many good people.

Hi 'Isle of Man'

Wow, you certainly have had a journey of ups and downs. You describe your challenges well both re physical and mental health. Hearing your story just reminds us all that there is so much more to the situation than just the alcohol itself. You appear to be back on track and you will be welcomed with open arms if you want to support other people experiencing similar issues. Your bravery and commitment to turning your life around is amazing and something everyone I'm sure will applaud you about.

Keep talking, keep sharing and most of all keep going!!! Look forward to meeting you face to face one day in the role of peer mentor!

Ill pass on your kind words to Dawn!!

Thanks
