"Exceptional duty of care from staff"

About: South Tyrone Hospital / Day Clinical Centre

(as a service user),

I used to attend the Day Clinical Centre at the Neurology Department in Craigavon until the unfortunate outbreak of Covid 19 where treatment had to be moved to South Tyrone Hospital in Dungannon.

I have only just started attending the clinic in Dungannon and on my first day I was extremely happy to see some of the friendly warm faces that looked after me in Craigavon.  I suffer from an extremely rare disorder and I do not cope well with change.  It heightens my anxiety levels and my body does not cope well with it.  So I was honestly terrified for the new change and what to expect.  But I was very surprised when I arrived.  I was instantly greeted with a smile from Margaret who helped get me settled in.  The nursing staff are always so helpful & kind & nothing is ever any trouble to them.

They are a credit to the NHS to the duty of care that they continually carry out each and everyday.  If I could give a medal to anyone it would have to be Margaret from the care and attention she gives each individual patient.  She takes the time like the majority of the nurses to explain what the care plan is and what will be happening step by step.  They all introduce themselves, have a smile on their face even though they are rushed off their  feet and have so many patients to look after.

I really like the layout and space in the South Tyrone Hospital. Patients are not on top of each other and there is plenty of space between each patient.  Don't get me wrong I really like attending Craigavon as the duty of care from the staff there is exceptional but there is not enough space in the small wards for the patients especially to social distance with a lot of patients suffering from health complications, where their immune systems are compromised.  Dungannon provides that space for patients.  Because from my own opinion it makes me feel more comfortable.

The only downside is the parking facilities and I am not close to my consultant but there are an amazing doctor and I know is only a call away and the staff keep them updated.

Thank you.

Is it very humbling to read your story on Care Opinion and learn how you battled your fears to overcome the change in relocating our Service to South Tyrone Hospital in order to keep our vulnerable patients safe during Covid 19. I am so glad to hear that you were able to attend for your treatment despite the fact you are suffering from your "rare disorder" make dealing with change very difficult for you.

I am very proud of my staff, especially of Margaret, who made you feel so welcome and at ease. I am also very happy to learn that the "layout and space" of our new but temporary location, allowed us to more readily adhere to the social distancing guidance expected of each of us during this pandemic. As you rightly point out, this indeed has gone a long way to support the giving of essential medication to patients such as yourself who are immunosuppressed.

I am sorry to hear that you had difficulty parking and will raise your concern with management accordingly in the hope that this may improve.

Nonetheless, I wish to thankyou once again for this very important and detailed account of your visit to us in Dungannon and hope now your anxieties have been allayed so that you will be able to receive future treatments with us here through these uncertain times.
