"They added to my distress"

About: Borders General Hospital / General Surgery (Ward 7) Margaret Kerr Unit

(as a relative),

My husband received wonderful care  on Ward 7 at Borders General Hospital when he was admitted very seriously ill in June. Dr McLaren and his team were exceptionally supportive also to me and my family.

Unfortunately I can’t say the same about the Margaret Kerr Unit where he was transferred to the following Tuesday. I do understand that they had only opened their doors the previous day but I have absolutely nothing positive to say about the staff we met there, my husband’s care or support for me. They added so much to the distress of coping with my husband’s death.

I have instructed my children that no matter how ill I ever become, they are not to allow me to be admitted there.

Dear Agnes,

I am so sorry to hear of your experience of the Margaret Kerr Unit and the impact it has had on you and your family. If you felt able to, I am sure Gillian the Senior Charge Nurse and myself would be keen to hear exactly where care and support was poor and help to inform improvement as a result. We are like every other area of the hospital adjusting to new ways of working so your input would be invaluable, though would understand if you do not feel able to just now. The offer is there and open.

If you would like to contact me directly through the Macmillan centre (who provide our administrative support) then please do on 01896 826888.
