I was concerned about how we would cope, he is a normally fit 87 and I am 75 but we knew he would be weak when he came home. Then we had a call from the local Home First offering morning and evening support. It was brilliant. Help with showering and dressing in the morning for 2 weeks which was as long as we needed it, evening help for a few days until we didn't need it any more. OT and Physio came and checked what we needed and saw him down the stairs the first time. A handyman came and fixed a grab handle over the bath so he could use that shower.
The colo-rectal nurse, the continence pad service, the pharmacist from the health centre and the GP all made contact without us having to do anything and made sure we were alright.
The overall service was excellent.
"Support at home after my husband came home from major surgery."
