For many years I suffered bouts of sudden extreme fatigue. The cause remained undiagnosed until 2014 when blood tests revealed a Vitamin b12 deficiency caused by Pernicious Anaemia (PA). I was prescribed an initial course of B12 injections three times a week for two weeks and thereafter every 3 months for life.
Following the Covid-19 outbreak my doctor suspended these injections suggesting B12 tablets instead. As my symptoms recently re-appeared I contacted the surgery to inquire about restarting injections, a call-back from my doctor informed me they had no record of PA and attempted to redefine the original diagnosis as a folate deficiency. I was asked to attend the surgery for an (unspecified) antibody blood test. I had one B12 Ampoule remaining from my last prescription held at the surgery and expected to be injected with this at the same time, the nurse flatly refused to do this quoting “Government instructions”. Given that I was already at the surgery for the blood test this was pointless, illogical and rather cruel denial of treatment and waste of NHS resources as ampoules held at the surgery become time expired.
I suspect this is a government initiative introduced under the guise of the Covid pandemic to save money. They are ignoring the longer term implications to the patient that will ultimately either cost the NHS more or result in a shorter less pleasant life for the sufferer.
