"Suspension of B12 Injections"

About: General Practices in Grampian

(as the patient),

For many years I suffered bouts of sudden extreme fatigue. The cause remained undiagnosed until 2014 when blood tests revealed a Vitamin b12 deficiency caused by Pernicious Anaemia (PA). I was prescribed an initial course of B12 injections three times a week for two weeks and thereafter every 3 months for life.

Following the Covid-19 outbreak my doctor suspended these injections suggesting B12 tablets instead. As my symptoms recently re-appeared I contacted the surgery to inquire about restarting injections, a call-back from my doctor informed me they had no record of PA and attempted to redefine the original diagnosis as a folate deficiency.   I was asked to attend the surgery for an (unspecified) antibody blood test.  I had one B12 Ampoule remaining from my last prescription held at the surgery and expected to be injected with this at the same time, the nurse flatly refused to do this quoting “Government instructions”.  Given that I was already at the surgery for the blood test this was pointless, illogical and rather cruel denial of treatment and waste of NHS resources as ampoules held at the surgery become time expired.

I suspect this is a government initiative introduced under the guise of the Covid pandemic to save money.  They are ignoring the longer term implications to the patient that will ultimately either cost the NHS more or result in a shorter less pleasant life for the sufferer.

Thanks for sharing your story with us ht.

Covid-19 did result in many services normally delivered by GP practices being suspended – including vitamin B12 injections. This was to help minimise the contact with services and reduce the risk of spreading the virus. However, I can understand being informed by the doctor that there is no record of your previous PA diagnosis and not being able to access a B12 ampule from your last prescription must be very frustrating.

I’m wondering if it would be helpful for you to get a fuller and clearer explanation from the practice about why things happened the way they did? Most GP Practices in Grampian are run independently and don't readily access the Care Opinion platform, so if you feel comfortable, it would be best to get in touch with the practice manager yourself but I would be happy to share your story with them if you’d like to let me know which practice you visited? You can do so by email: kirsten.dickson@nhs.net or telephone 01224 558404.

Hopefully hear from you soon,

Kirsten
