"A dislocated shoulder."

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Accident & Emergency Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Orthopaedics Scottish Ambulance Service

(as a relative),

My wife and I had just arrived at our holiday lodge in Galloway earlier this month when she fell and dislocated her shoulder at about 16:30. I tried to move her but I could not and she was in such pain from her left arm that she could not get up herself.

I dialled 999 and in what seemed like minutes the ambulance and paramedics arrived. I think they were based in Gatehouse of Fleet. The crew were very calm and reassuring. They expertly splinted her arm and gave her gas and air  and painkillers for the pain before they gently lifted her and moved her out to the ambulance.

We were taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary where my wife received truly excellent attention from all the staff. It turns out she had dislocated her shoulder and fractured the humeral tubercle which was why she was in so much pain. The consultant (whose first name was Chris) managed to manipulate her shoulder back into place under sedation and my wife was allowed home at 22:30.

A few days later my wife had a telephone consultation with the orthopaedic nurse who has arranged a followup appointment with the orthopaedic surgeon at Dumfries. We are both very grateful to all the ambulance and hospital staff who treated my wife with such professional excellence and kindness.

Dear DouglasW

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us on Care Opinion. I am so sorry that this happened to your wife just at the start of your holiday, especially having been on lockdown for so long.

It is wonderful to hear that the teams of NHS Dumfries & Galloway treated your wife with such care and attention and I know that following the stresses and strains of the past few months, all of those involved will be delighted to hear such positive praise for the hard work that they do on a daily basis.

I am delighted that you found the staff to be professional, caring but most of all kind. I will ensure that all teams involved are made aware of your lovely feedback and kind words.

I wish your wife a speedy recovery and hope that you managed to enjoy at least some of your holiday in the region.

Kind regards

Alexis

Dear DouglasW

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback here on CareOpinion. I am so sorry to read that your wife dislocated her shoulder. That is extremely painful, and just as you arrived at your holiday lodge as well...

I am however really pleased to read that you and your wife had such a positive experience from the NHS in particular our services. I would be grateful for the opportunity to feedback your kind words to the crew that attended. If you would like for this to happen can you email my team at Scotamb.feedback@nhs.net and provide a few details (your wifes name, the date and time we attended and the full address). That way I can locate the call and let the crew and their manager know they did a great job! (If you wouldn't mind referencing your care opinion username also so the team can link it back to this story that'd be really helpful).

I hope that your wife is feeling much better now and I wish you both all the very best.

Kind Regards

Alan
