"Prostate Cancer and PMR"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Cancer Services

(as the patient),

In February 2017 I went to the doctors with a "bad" back, I came out of the surgery with PMR (what's that? ) and prostate cancer, for which I had had no symptons what so ever.

After a blood test the following week (PSA 42), I found myself, very frightened and nervous, in an Outpatients clinic at North Devon Hospital. Next ordeal was a biopsy, the thought of this absolutely terrified me, previously I was not too happy just having a blood sample taken, basically I am a coward when it comes to medical matters.   All the staff at the biopsy were brilliant, very patient, understanding and genuinely caring. The biopsy was no where near as bad as I feared it was going to be.

Next on the agenda, Chemotherapy!   Maybe I was lucky, the only after effect I had was severe constipation, alright I did not feel brilliant for a few days after each session, but that was all. My consultant is fantastic even taking the trouble to schedule my sessions so that I would be at my best for my daughters wedding.

All that's now history and three and a half years later, I have come to terms with the fact there is no cure for my cancer, only control, I feel better than I have for years, this I am convinced is partially  down to the excellent treatment I have received in the hospital coupled with the unfailing friendiness and patience of the staff, For me the only downside of hospital appointments has been car parking! .

Dear Fred 53

Thank you for taking the time to update us on the care you have received over the last three years. By telling your story it helps us to understand what is important and shape our future services.

Your feedback has been passed to the Cancer Services team and Cath Dring, Urology Cancer Nurse Specialist has replied on their behalf. She asked me to pass on the following:

"I'm pleased to hear that you are doing well and that the biopsy was nowhere near as bad as you anticipated. I think most men are apprehensive before having a biopsy and I hope your feedback reassures other men that it is not too bad. I'm so pleased that we were able to work around such an important date for your daughters wedding - I'm sure it was an amazing day."

Best wishes

Cath
