"Not being able to visit and poor communication"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

I have a very sick family member on phoenix ward. Communication has been rubbish at best - put off all day every day, told to call in an hour then do that and they are stuck  on repeat.

My family member does not have COVID 19 and is in need of family support right now. Tried getting her a phone in to use, staff say they will help with us calling them but they never do. We cant speak to them and the staff hardly call to update us and when they do the info is poor at best. If you can not keep us posted its time like other hospitals you allow one family member in at least to see them to see how they are and try to lift there spirits. How do we know what clothes to take and collect dirty clothes , the hospital gown's are not suitable to keep people covered. With out talking to an elderly family member how do we know what to take them I live an hour from hospital so cant just take the chance I got the stuff they need right.

Where have all this ipads gone that where brought for patients to be able to video call Family? They were very quick to tell the press that they were keeping everyone updated on family in hospital - i don't think so, the system seems very broken. Have we now gone back to the middle ages where people are scared to go into hospital as that is the place you go to die .

Thank you for your feedback and we are very sorry to learn of the problems you've faced communicating with ward staff and your loved one at this worrying time. We have brought your concerns to the attention of the Senior nursing team on Phoenix ward so that the problems are addressed.

If you would like help in getting in touch with the ward you are welcome to contact our PALS team (Patient advice and Liaison Service) and they will be happy to request that you are telephoned. The PALS team can be contacted on 01634 825004 or medwayft.pals@nhs.net

Kindest regards,

The Patient Experience Team
