"My sons experience with treatment for labrythitis"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire

(as a relative),

My son has had problems with dizziness, nausea, balance and concentration. This initially was for 4 weeks and got better as expected, he got meds for nausea from Gp and was fine until 3 weeks later it came back.

Gp again prescribed for nausea, this was 10 weeks ago. We waited 5 weeks, GP refereed to ENT, they lettered to say no appointments because of COVID but phoned 2 weeks later and gave exercises. He has been doing these with no improvement.

For the past 2 weeks he has been really low. He has had constant vertigo, nausea, can’t sleep, can’t eat, has anxiety and now has anti depressants. We have called ENT, gp, nhs24 trying to get help. He now feels suicidal! But looks like this is still not urgent.

Ok we know COVID is putting pressure on services but when my 23 year old can’t go out the house, can’t work, can’t drive and spend all day feeling the world spinning and doesn’t eat,  surely there has to be something that can be done?

He’s on anti depressants because his physical illness is not being dealt with.

I know it may not be life threatening but because he feels so desperate I m scared to leave him alone.

We even went to A  and E I was so worried about his mood. Same story go home wait and keep taking the pills!

I have no idea what to do next.

Dear Sitandwaitquietly

Firstly I am very sorry for the delay in responding to your post on Care Opinion and was sorry to read of the symptoms your son is currently experiencing.

I note that your son's GP had referred him for an ENT review, however due to covid-19, a telephone consultant was provided. From reading your post it is clear that you are understandably worried about your son and feel that he needs further help. I would suggest that you contact your son's GP practice to see if they can offer additional advice and support or contact the ENT department on your son's behalf to facilitate another appointment with a specialist.

Unfortunately, GPs are independent contractors and are responsible for investigating and responding to any concerns a person may have about their service; they are not registered to respond directly to feedback through Care Opinion.

Kind regards.

Lesley

Update posted by Sitandwaitquietly (a relative)

I have no issue with the GP. My issue is with ENT.

A young man was left desperate. He had one call from ENT and emailed exercises, they said they’d call back in 2 weeks. They didn t, he called them back, he was told they weren’t going to phone back but did agreed to call him back which they did a couple of days later.

He was given more exercises, which he still does. He has no further contact although they were aware of how desperate he was!

Is your answer that we need to go back to the GP again? That’s not helpful when we thought we were awaiting an appointment for him to be seen!

My son praises the psychiatric services who provided support through nhs 24. He called them twice because his symptoms were so bad he felt there was no reason to go on. He’s on beta blockers and anti depressants. Same ENT can’t see what this illness does to people, no it’s not life threatening in that it won’t kill him but it certainly made him think that life was so bad it wasn’t worth living.

I m not actually sure I got an answer with regard to quality of treatment through ENT. Just a go back to GP.

Not helpful at all I m afraid! Disappointing!

Dear Sitandwaitquietly

Thank you for your reply and I am sorry that you felt my response was unhelpful. In order for me to assist further, I would be grateful if you could let me know which ENT department made contact with your son. Once I have this information I will be able to provide you with details of the correct department for your son to contact to obtain additional help and support. If you are not able to do this, your GP would be able to contact them on your son's behalf to try to expedite a further appointment.

Kind regards.

Lesley
