"Amputation (left leg)"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Trauma & orthopaedics (wards 26, 27, 61 & 62 )

(as the patient),

Was due to have a leg amputated by May but this was postponed due to COVID19. My depression got worse due to my procedure being postponed and the pain was so terrible I had to give in and accept the morphine offered to me. The side effects are horrific and I'm still in ALOT of pain but I don't want to accept the offered increase.

Am I angry that my surgery was postponed, of course, I am, I'm in terrible terrible pain that is spreading and getting worse.

HOWEVER - I do not blame the staff at the GRI, who have been wonderful. They have been under tremendous pressure due to COVID19. And to me they are Heroes.

Please if your upset that surgery or treatment has been delayed due to the current crisis, that the staff are doing the best they can under so much pressure and cut them some slack.

Dear PurpleHaze 76,

I was sorry to read your Care Opinion post and the troubles you have experienced as a result of surgical delays enforced by CoVID pressures.

Despite the problems you are encountering I do appreciate your understanding of the situation together with your fortitude in dealing with your position. I would like to thank you for your positive views of the GRI staff and your recognition and understanding of the pressures the wider service has been experiencing as a result of the pandemic.

If it would be helpful I would be happy to make enquiries regarding your case.If you would wish me to do this please contact me on 07900678367 and I will contact orthopaedic colleagues on your behalf..

Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

Your sincerely,

John Stuart

Chief Nurse.

Hi John

Thanks for your response and I completely appreciate your offer. I have been in touch with my consultant and he says he has my on his priority list but still cannot offer me an approximate time of how long I will still be required to wait.

Despite how much pain I am experiencing, and the fact that I hate relying on Morphine (which only takes the edge off the pain) due to the horrid side effects I do know that there are people who are worse off than me and that will and should be dealt with first and foremost.

No doubt I will get my surgery as soon as is possible given the backlog created due to the pandemic. And until that time I will just have to live with the pain.

Stay safe:)
