"Hearing aid repair/maintenance"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Audiological medicine

(as a service user),

I phoned yesterday The clinic is shut and will be for the foreseeable future 'We can't have people coming into the hospital ' You are required to send your hearing aids in the post so are without them for several days !! Why don't they have a van like breast screening ?? As if things are not difficult enough for deaf people at the moment with screens and masks and social distancing. It is just miserable and quite disappointing in this day and age .

Dear curlytop,

My name is Melissa McDermott and I'm responsible for the Audiology service. I'm sorry to hear your experience of calling the department and your frustration in the limited service. Our open access clinic would normally have 40-50 people calling in which in addition to the Audiology & ENT appointments would make the area unsafe due to the Covid-19 situation it therefore isn't possible to reopen at the moment for everyone's safety. We are offering booked maintenance slots where it isn't possible to resolve the concern by any other means.

You are right we do need to look at other ways of supporting people especially as all the community hospitals aren't open yet making it harder for people to access support locally.

Thank you for raising this and bringing it to my attention.

Kind regards

Melissa McDermott MSc

Head of Audiology
