I was referred to Gravesham minor injuries by the 111 service recently. I attended Gravesham minor injuries to be told that I could not be seen there, was incorrectly told I was contagious for chicken pox and was quickly removed from the minor injuries waiting room. I was directed towards the primary care unit and told to call 111 again and see if the doctor attending could fit me in as I needed assessment and anti viral medication for shingles. I was told to sit in the waiting area in the phlebotomy/primary care area by a staff member. When the doctor called me in, they told me I should not be there and should not have been in the waiting area in case someone pregnant was there. Shingles is only contagious for chicken pox during the blister phase and I barely had skin redness in my armpit (the area of which was completely covered by my clothes). I was made to feel guilty about not having a clinician’s level of understanding regarding the risk I ‘might’ pose and only did as I was told by medical staff. I was made to feel like I could have made someone else ill and was wasting the doctor’s time, despite following the instructions I was given by health professionals and effective treatment being time dependant from the onset of symptoms. I was feeling very unwell and I would not want anyone else to be made to feel the same way I did with the ‘care’ I received. I am thankful to the doctor for managing to fit me in quickly and prescribing me the anti virals that appear to have halted the progression of the shingles and I am feeling better now but improvements in patient care could be made.
"Helpful but judgemental service experience"
