After speaking to my GP, and getting a referral to a Gender Identity Clinic, after about 12 months I was invited to a group workshop to talk with other potential patients, former patients, to meet the staff and talk about the process of being referred to the clinic. It was extremely helpful and demystifying for what was a very daunting process.
I received my first appointment soon after and has various appointments with different professionals over the course of 12 months who assessed me. It was just like having a chat and I felt incredibly comfortable with the process and the team. A case conference was held in my absence and I received a diagnosis of gender dysphoria and transsexualism and I was offered treatments. I also received counselling from a mental health nurse, voice coaching and laser hair removal. 2 years on HRT I am now awaiting consideration for surgery. Everyone has been lovely with me, given me extra support when I have needed it, and I feel I am in safe hands.
