"3 omissions in a row !"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Neonatal Unit (Special Care Baby Unit) Aberdeen Maternity Hospital / Obstetrics (Maternity care)

(as a service user),

In short the title describes a absolute lot about this.

We have had no end of trouble from this with Aberdeen maternity hospital, 3 separate occasion and in short the worst administration you dread.

In July 2018, attended hospital for a pre assessment for a pre booked c section (to avoid labour due to previous abruption), Dr walked off, didn't listen or access notes. Later that night labour came, 3.8 litres of blood loss and child was intubated.

Had to raise the episodes of Dr in July and the drug accusation that came from the child being given morphine. (Later found other things, not disclosed by NHS Grampian)

Second case was November 2018 where the Dr was not in the right records at all, telling us our son never got morphine and wasn't in nnu, had to raise this with the previous complaint and the significant delay that happened.

Well gets worse from there, they had no clue who the Dr was who seen us, could have been anyone, they also hadn't looked at the complaint at all.

Roll onto January 2019 and we get a formal meeting.

Information was not shared and it was a rushed meeting with a lot of what we later found out was false and inaccurate portrayals.

They added a area onto our complaint that was not ours. (Confusion over c section)

In short was horrendous.

Sum it up..

Found out pregnant at 12 weeks, advised by multiple doctors to terminate due to previous abruption and likely hood of happening, advised that wouldn't get to labour afterwards, pre book c section. Get to pre assessment, no scan, Dr walked off, Dr didn't access records, got to labour which was to be avoided, lost 3.8 litres of blood, child got intubated given morphine at minutes old, drug accusation over the morphine. Complained, closed complaint never informed, never properly investigated, next Dr is in records but wrong ones, raise complaint and about delay, raise complaint over both drs. Get a meeting with administration staff, staff add drs false record onto the file as ours and our complaint, which it never was ever. Had to raise to spso, won the case but may have to go to judicial review due to a factor is within the complaint falsely placed by staff and not acting with parity.

Later find out from documents that during the time the complaint was open, our case handler had sent an internal email to another staff member stating "we are seeking compensation", false information on medical files taken while patient was "asleep" and not aware of questions.

So yeah... The drs and staff in the hospital saving lives and doing the work are amazing, we haven't faulted any of them.

We even submitted evidence to ensure midwifes wouldn't get in trouble because of a Dr in wrong records.

But the administration staff of NHS Grampian Aberdeen maternity... Just nope.

Spso decision is in our favour, even though it's missing factors courtesy of NHS grampian.

GMC have proven that the delay in hospital is the likely factor of the blood loss due to baby head being deeply engaged, but as there was no scan (which is illogical) it's hard to determine, alongside the fact the pregnancy was at 40 weeks not 38 as documented. There is other things disclosed from this.

The mother is actually getting psychological assistance now because of the November 2018 meeting and subsequent events afterwards.

Caused a lot of fear over interaction with doctors after that and the meeting with the "complaint case handler".

However...

Aberdeen mental health have been amazing, Aberdeen neonatal unit also, we had to ensure so much to make sure they weren't getting included in the complaint, as we stated now and as we state then, the doctor who was there when our son came was helpful and nice, made sure I was calm and tried to tell me a lot (Mrs was losing blood and son with tubes everywhere, trust me I wasn't taking it all in)

Ashgrove ward had a few bad but an amazing amount of nice staff, the midwife in charge is amazingly friendly and wasn't pushy.

Also as a note, no sorry for the "compensation" or any of the rest that came afterwards.

We still haven't got our medical records over a year later.

Worst case of respecting patients rights ever.

False information in files and dire experiences for us and our kids.

A clear case of how not to handle a complaint and how to disrespect a patient while a complaint was open.

Dear Adrifing,

Thank you for your posting on Care Opinion. We were saddened to read this experience is still having an impact on you and your family and we are deeply sorry for this.

On this occasion our response has to be more limited than we would normally prefer. We are aware that these events have been through formal processes including the involvement of the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman’s Office and the professional regulators for nurses and doctors. We have participated fully in these processes which included both learning from those complaints - which has helped ensure other families do not have the same experience - and also supporting our staff in the instances where complaints were not upheld.

We are grateful for the kind words you have shared about the members of staff who have supported you through this difficult period and will ensure your feedback is passed to them.

Kind regards,

Caroline
