"Inability to breathe properly through my nose"

About: Western Infirmary/Gartnavel General / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as the patient),

Inability to breathe properly through my nose due to outcome of ENT elective nasal septoplasty revision to adjust nasal obstruction

I was admitted to Gartnaval General Hospital in Glasgow for a deviated septum where I was scheduled for a nasal septoplasty in relation to nasal obstruction in March 2019. This procedure resulted in further deterioration in nasal obstruction and my ability to breathe through both nostrils was worsened. I was disappointed to learn that the procedure that was discussed at my pre op consultation did not in fact take place, and a less invasive and ultimately, less effective procedure was administered. The improvements were solely cosmetic and from the outside, my nose looked straighter- not a request or requirement from my initial concerns. My sole concern was that I could not breathe properly and that this was an increasing concern in respect of my overall health and wellbeing, including my mental health.

I then received another operation in November 2019, this time, with the agreement that that it would be a more invasive and corrective procedure. Unfortunately, the result of this procedure created further difficulties with breathing as the one nostril that had previously allowed me to breathe through my nose was now significantly obstructed, in addition to the already obstructed nostril having little or no improvement. My current situation is now unbearable and has further impacted my mental health due to difficulties carrying out basic fitness activities. I struggle to exercise due to my inability to breathe through my nose properly and this has negatively affected my mental health. Further worries include the impact on my ability to even carry out mundane tasks as my nostril can completely close, resulting in a frightening scenario of struggling to breathe and was left gasping for air through my mouth. (As you are no doubt aware, breathing through the nose is preferable to through the mouth as it as it is first defence against viruses and bacteria, which has obvious current relevance around increased risk of Covid-19.)Further benefits to breathing through the mouth allow for increased circulation, slows breathing rates and improves overall lung function.

I reported my concerns during my follow up consultation and it was suggested that a colleague carry out another procedure to rectify this problem, to which I agreed. Perhaps a different approach from another specialist medic within ENT, would be a solution and to be honest, I am willing to try anything to rectify this increasingly worrying issue.

Moreover, my immediate concerns lie with further exposure to general anaesthetic and potential weakness to my already compromised nasal structures. I would appreciate a prompt response so that this significant health issue can be addressed by a health professional in order that I can carry out basic daily tasks without continued worry and anxiety. My concerns are further compounded by my knowledge that a friend received the same operation with very positive results.

Hello Tilco,

I have spoken with my colleagues from the Greater Glasgow and Clyde ENT department and they have shared the below response:

We are very sorry to hear of your concerns and the difficulty you have been having recently. If you contact Rachel.pyle@ggc.scot.nhs.uk with your details we can arrange for one of our Rhinologists to review your case. It may be that returning for an assessment and second opinion may be helpful once coronavirus restrictions allow this

Best wishes,

Rachel
