"Access to Physiotherapy"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Physiotherapy University Hospital Wishaw / Rheumatology

(as a service user),

I live with a long term health condition which I self manage effectively using many different things. It does however require long term pain management which I try to do as much as possible without medication. This includes physio therapy which really helps alleviate pain when I am in a flare up. The last few weeks I have found myself in a flare up. My frustration is that the way that the current self referral process works is that I need to go back on the waiting list. The fluctuating nature of my condition means that I don’t know when/can’t plan for the need for some extra help from services. Access to the right additional support at the right time could make all the difference and ultimately use less resources in the long run.

Hi Dazzle,

I am sorry to read of your long term condition and your pain which flares up from time to time. It's great to hear that you are able to manage it effectively without medication most of the time and you find physiotherapy helpful. At the moment, during COVID 19, routine services have not been able to operate in the usual way and I appreciate the distress this causes. We are hopeful these services will be back up and running before long.

We do not currently offer open access to physiotherapy however that is something we can consider for the future.

The rheumatology service within Lanarkshire offers a patient helpline and can be contacted on the following numbers:

Rheumatology helpline: Hairmyres 01355 585222 Wishaw 01698 366088 Monklands 01236 712611

I hope you are able to access support at this time via this route and your pain eases.

Kind regards,

Update posted by Dazzle (a service user)

It is interesting that almost 2 years later I find myself in the same situation again (see recent post ) - and no changes have been made.

I would be interested to know if any thought has gone into a service such as this over the last 2 years as our healthcare system has seen many changes.
