I was referred to the UTC from the MIU in St Austell to which I was initially sent having rung 111. The systems for protection against Covid19 seemed clear there were certainly plenty of hand washing facilities and hand gel everywhere. I passed through triage at the UTC, then had a really prompt ultrasound scan, followed by quite a long wait to see a doctor. However during the time I was waiting two air ambulances arrived and multiple tannoy calls for staff to attend the emergency department, so I was not surprised that they were rather pressed. I was examined by a doctor, and he arranged for an immediate MRI scan. This took place almost immediately, and although I had to wait for the result to be discussed with me by the doctor, I was eventually discharged home with detailed advice on managing my pain levels. My total visit to the UTC took about 5 hours. I was offered both tea and a snack as I had eaten almost nothing all day. At all times I was well looked after by staff who were professional and caring in what must be very trying circumstances.
One negative however, although I was wearing a hospital gown for my MRI scan, and no strange clothing, my back was slightly burned by the scan which was for my lumbar vertebrae. I did complain to the staff afterwards that it was very hot, but she said it was normal. I do not believe that a burn is normal. If this issue could be referred to the scan unit, I would be grateful. My husband has taken a photo if they want to see it.
"Excellent service considering the conditions"
