"I've got my life back"

I've suffered with OCD since I was tiny, it was always a little joke with my family and friends that I needed to check things were off/shut/locked, so I never thought to get help. It wasn't until last year when my checking was beginning to take over my life and stopping me from leaving the house that I decided enough was enough. I was referred to Inclusion Thurrock by my GP and they were fantastic. I'm never going to be rid of OCD, it'll always be my unwanted little friend, but Inclusion Thurrock taught me how to deal with the niggles and reduce them down to manageable tasks. They never made me feel silly or embarrassed and offered constant encouragement. I've got my life back and I can't thank them enough. It's a relief to know that they are there should I ever have a wobble in the future. I would recommend them to anyone struggling mentally, even if you think you're being silly, you most definitely are not.

Thank you for being so honest and open. I think it’s really important that you’ve spoken about different stages we can go through with our mental health - sometimes we can be experiencing symptoms but they aren’t causing a problem for us and so getting support wouldn’t ever cross our minds. These symptoms can sometimes increase and begin to impact our life more and more, until they are unmanageable and it can take a lot of strength and bravery to ask for help. Well done for taking that step. I love that you’re accepting that your symptoms may not ever go away entirely, because we all have good days and bad days, but it’s how we cope with them that counts. You said it right though – you got your life back; you worked hard and it paid off, so well done!

I completely agree with you when you say that people shouldn’t feel they’re being “silly”. Anxiety and depression is so common, but people aren’t usually very open about their thoughts, feelings or behaviours with others and so you can feel like you’re alone. That’s what we’re here for though, like you said, to encourage and support, without judgement.
