"Excellent doctor, ward sister and OT team on ward…"

About: West Heath Hospital

Our 89 year old mother was admitted to Ward 12 in April 2020. The doctor there was truly excellent taking time to review all medication, treat my mother with kindness and empathy and earn the praise ' a wonderful doctor' from her. His holistic approach and superb communication skills should be hailed as pioneering in UK geriatric healthcare. He kept us fully informed every step of the way during the lockdown period. Sadly our father died from Covid 19 while mom was on ward 12 and the ward sister stepped in when we couldn't be with her. We will never forget her kindness that day. Other nurses and the OT team were also caring and supportive even checking on Mum after discharge from hospital to make sure she had everything she needed. Some of the night nurses/assistants let the side down as they appeared dismissive and quite uncaring especially when Mum was feeling particularly anxious. It's such a shame because the others mentioned above were true professionals and a credit to their profession. Thank you.

Dear Ms Richey

Thank you for taking time to post your feedback about your mother's stay on Ward 12 at West Heath Hospital. I have ensured your comments have been shared with the ward team. May I offer my sincere condolences for the loss of your father to Covid 19, and I hope the support of the ward team helped you and your mother through this difficult time.

We are keen to look into the actions, manner and attitude of the night staff, which your comments tell us fell below the standard we would expect. Please do contact me to tell me a bit more detail so that we can make improvements where needed. I can be contacted by email alison.last@bhamcommunity.nhs.uk or phone 0121 466 7128. I look forward to hearing from you.

May I close by again offering my condolences for your loss and thank you for your helpful feedback.

With kind regards

Alison Last
