"Breach baby delivery"

About: Aberdeen Maternity Hospital Peterhead Community Hospital / Maternity Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as the patient),

I went into labour on the morning of Wednesday 13th and spent most of the day at Peterhead hospital before they realised my little girl was breach. Once this was discovered it was a whirlwind of getting an ambulance and getting me through to Aberdeen maternity before my waters broke and the nurses and paramedics obviously didn’t want me trying to push our girl out on the dual carriageway. So my first thank you is to the midwives and student who sat with me and my partner and talked us through everything and to keeping me calm and reminding me to breathe through my back to back contractions.

Once getting to Aberdeen it was decided that a c section was the best and safest option so off we went to theatre and though I don’t remember much at this point, names or faces, I would like to say a massive thank you to the scrub team who talked me through every step of the way and the girls who held my hand till my partner could catch up and get in with me and another thank you to the surgeons who delivered us our perfectly healthy baby girl at 19:55.

Obviously due to the pandemic, my partner had to go home at this point while we were shipped off to the Ashgrove ward but not once did I ever feel alone. I had an amazing student who I felt so comfortable with who will make an incredible nurse so I hope all goes well with the remaining of your studies and wish you all the best.

So this is a thank you to the NHS staff from the bottom of my heart for just being my heroes that terrifying day. The fact that their job has been made so much harder with having to wear masks and take all the extra precaution etc at all times, but it’s not slowed them down or changed the way that they do the main one fundamental aspect of their job and that’s the care towards their patients. Not once did I see them falter. The nurses, ambulance crew, students and surgeons were nothing short of amazing. Their care was just the best. I hope those who were there that day might see this so you can receive my thanks and appreciation x

Dear Patient J,

Thank you for taking the time to contact us through Care Opinion to tell us about your experience.

Congratulations on the birth of your baby Daughter!

From your feedback, I can understand that your experience must have been extremely worrying for you whilst at Peterhead Hospital and then during the journey to the Maternity Hospital in Aberdeen.

I am delighted to read that you found all the NHS staff including the Scottish Ambulance Service crew reassuring and caring during your journey from Peterhead to Aberdeen.

We will be able to identify the crew from the information you have shared and will ensure that this feedback is given to the crew.

They will be delighted to hear of your daughter's safe arrival and that they have played their bit ensuring the patient has been at the centre of care.

Take care.

Dear Patient J,

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch to share your birth experience with us, it certainly was an eventful one.

Your experience demonstrates how well our service can manage unexpected situations but as you point out even with the challenges of Covid 19 the staff remained professional and made sure that you are your partner were kept well informed throughout.

The visiting restrictions for partners is certainly something that we worried would be very difficult but it is reassuring to hear that you never felt alone.

I will pass on your feedback to the teams who I know will be delighted that you have taken the time to get in touch.

May I wish you and your family all the best for the future.

Kind Regards

Liz
